What is CNC machining, and how does CNC machining work?
CNC machining is a manufacturing process that involves pre-programmed computer software dictating the movement of factory tools and machinery.
The CNC machining process involves using computer-aided design (CAD) files to carry the specifications of a project. Panel Systems can accept customers’ own CAD files in a variety of formats. The machine then employs computerised controls and machining tools to both cut to shape and, where appropriate, remove layers of material from a base piece until the desired results are achieved.
The use of CAD designs makes the production process highly accurate. Once the drawings are complete and committed to file, they will be used to produce multiple versions of the product in question according to the specifications of the order. Find out more about CNC machining tools here.
What materials can we cut and supply with CNC machining?
We have the ability to supply and cut a wide range of materials using CNC machine tools:
- Ravatherm XPS Insulation (Formerly Styrofoam)
- Fibran XPS Insulation
- Plywood / MDF
- Aluminium composites
- ABS
- Aluminium Honeycomb Panels
- Perspex
- Solid grade Laminate – brands include: Formica, Abet, Greenlam, Trespa, Fundermax, Polyrey, Sonae & Pfleiderer. Read our full guide to solid grade laminate here.
What markets and sectors benefit from CNC machining?
Underfloor heating systems
- Water-based underfloor heating: CNC machining is used with extruded polystyrene such as Ravatherm XPS (formerly Styrofoam) for use in water-based underfloor heating systems. The customer’s own pipe layout is incorporated, and grooves are routed into the insulation board in order to house the water pipes of the heating system. This will allow the pipes to sit flush in the grooved areas, providing an effective method of insulation. This increases the efficiency of the overall system and prevents heat loss through the floor. Read our guide to CNC machining for underfloor heating here.
- Electric underfloor heating: In addition to water-based underfloor heating systems, thin-cut Ravatherm XPS (formerly Styrofoam) sheets are supplied for electric-based systems. The thinner sheets are used to sit underneath the electric matting and provide added insulation.
