What is Thermoplastic honeycomb core?

Thermoplastic honeycomb cores made from polypropylene, such as ThermHex, are used to produce
lightweight yet incredibly strong sandwich panels. These panels are widely used in automotive
applications, shipbuilding, industrial equipment and leisure vehicle manufacturing.

This material is produced using a patented process that forms a hexagonal honeycomb structure, which is placed between outer skins to create a sandwich panel, that provides exceptional mechanical strength and stability.

Finished with a polypropylene barrier film, it restricts resin or adhesives from soaking into the open cells and affecting mechanical performance. ThermHex can also be finished in a PET non-woven material for easy bonding to a range of facing materials, such as metals, plastic, timber, and decorative laminate.

What are sandwich panels?

A sandwich panel is a composite structure consisting of three layers. It consists of a lightweight core material which is sandwiched between the two outer layers. The core can be made from a polypropylene honeycomb, aluminium honeycomb or XPS foam (extruded polystyrene). Most of our lightweight panels use ThermHex honeycomb core, as it is lightweight, yet has an extremely rigid structure.
