While Ravatherm XPS is best known for its role in the building and construction industries, its properties make it just as valuable in the cold chain sector, which stores, transports and distributes temperature-sensitive products under controlled conditions from production to final delivery. This includes its use in insulated packaging solutions for chilled and frozen goods, as well as in refrigerated trucks.

In this blog, we take a closer look at the benefits of Ravatherm, exploring how its versatility makes it ideal for temperature-controlled packaging solutions, particularly through the use of our CNC machining capabilities.

What is Ravatherm XPS and where is it used?

Ravatherm XPS is a high-performance extruded polystyrene insulation material with a closed-cell structure. This gives it a unique combination of strength, light weight and excellent thermal performance.

Over the years, it has become a go-to material across several industries. In construction, it’s commonly found in under-slab floor insulation, under-floor heating systems, inverted roofs and door panels, where it delivers thermal efficiency. It also plays an important role in composite panel manufacturing, acting as a strong yet lightweight core for walls, and furniture components.

These same qualities make Ravatherm XPS incredibly well-suited to cold-chain applications. As cold-chain systems rely on insulation that performs consistently at low temperatures, Ravatherm’s low thermal conductivity is a major advantage. Its moisture resistance ensures stability even in environments where condensation or fluctuating temperatures are common.

Thanks to its impressive strength-to-weight ratio, Ravatherm XPS adds structural reliability to insulated containers and packaging without increasing overall weight, an important benefit for handling and transport efficiency.

Five key benefits of Ravatherm XPS for cold chain packaging

  • Excellent thermal performance: Ravatherm XPS offers consistently low thermal conductivity, providing strong thermal resistance that helps maintain stable internal temperatures. This is essential in cold-chain applications where even minor heat transfer can compromise product integrity during transit.
  • High compressive and mechanical strength: Cold-chain packaging often needs to withstand stacking, vibration and movement throughout the supply chain. Ravatherm XPS performs exceptionally well under load, resisting compression and bending, which makes it ideal as a structural element within insulated containers and packaging systems.
  • Moisture, water and vapour resistance: Temperature-controlled environments commonly experience condensation and fluctuating humidity. The closed-cell structure of Ravatherm XPS prevents water absorption, ensuring that its insulating performance remains stable even in damp, chilled or refrigerated conditions.
  • Lightweight: Weight is a critical factor in cold-chain logistics, affecting handling, shipping efficiency and overall fuel consumption. Ravatherm XPS offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, providing robust insulation and support without adding unnecessary mass to packaging or containers.
  • Versatile fabrication options: Ravatherm XPS can be easily shaped through hot-wire cutting, sanding, grooving or precision CNC machining. This flexibility allows for the creation of bespoke inserts, linings and structural components tailored to specific cold-chain packaging designs, ensuring a precise fit and optimal thermal performance.

Expanding CNC-machined Ravatherm XPS for cold chain shipping

We are extending the use of Ravatherm XPS into the cold chain sector by providing CNC-machined insulation components. Our in-house CAD/CAM facilities and large 3 & 5 axis CNC routers enable us to rapidly prototype customer requirements and produce custom pieces that slot seamlessly into specialist packaging designs and container systems.

We also have one of the largest specialist fabrication units for the hot-wire cutting of XPS insulation in Europe. Our hot-wire cutting facilities include large volume and small batch capability as sheets can be cut to a thickness of 6mm and by 0.5mm increments to around 165mm. The hot-wire cut surface of Ravatherm XPS X is ideal for the application of adhesives and is fully compatible with metals, plastics and timber-based products for bonding purposes.

By machining Ravatherm XPS with precision, we can create inserts and structures that support consistent thermal performance, improve durability and optimise internal layouts for temperature-sensitive products. Its adaptability means every component can be tailored to meet the exact requirements of a particular container or shipper, helping to enhance both performance and efficiency throughout the temperature-controlled supply chain.
