There are significant changes underway in the supply of Styrofoam the market leading extruded polystyrene.
The European Union has adopted a regulation on fluorinated greenhouse gases which are used in key applications including the production of Styrofoam extruded polystyrene foam. The use of such gases is to be restricted as of January 2020.
In preparation of the above, our supplier Dow Chemical, the leading XPS manufacturer has developed new technology to significantly improve the thermal resistance of Styrofoam. This has resulted in a new product type called XENERGY™ Styrofoam.
During 2018 Dow Chemical will cease the manufacture of blue Styrofoam and replace with the new XENERGY™ Styrofoam. This product will be dark grey in colour and offer the same mechanical properties but will provide improved thermal performance.
The process of winding down stocks of blue Styrofoam is already underway with some grades already exhausted such as RTM, these will be supplied in the new improved grade of XENERGY™ . Other grades will be phased in over coming months. Full technical data sheets on the new improved product are available to download here and here.
