Why is it important to choose the best type of garage floor insulation for a customer?
Effective floor insulation is essential for living areas as it continually reduces costs and provides environmental benefits. Good quality garage floor insulation brings an extra dimension to your customer’s garage space in various ways. Garages are one of the most useful spaces in a home, and concrete floor insulation can expand their use even more. Whether your customer is hoping to use their garage in the traditional way as a car storage space, or they use it as a workshop, gym or hobby room, high-quality garage floor insulation will mean their space is comfortable to use all year round. The right type of insulation can also help to protect against issues such as water damage and improve safety.
The benefits of using Styrofloor for garage floor insulation
Styrofloor can be an ideal option for your project, and your customers will enjoy a water resistant and environmentally friendly solution for their garage conversion. Styrofloor panels are manufactured from P5 moisture-resistant chipboard and Ravatherm XPS, an extruded polystyrene insulation. This is a form of insulation that is manufactured using an extrusion process, resulting in a closed cell structure which has a smooth surface on the top and bottom and prevents water from penetrating through the insulation board.
Styrofloor can be used to insulate floors in residential and commercial projects for both new build and refurbishment. Here are some key benefits of using Styrofloor for garage floor insulation:
Practicality
Combining both insulation and a floor finish, using Styrofloor is cost-effective and practical solution. Excellent compressive strength and water resistance add to the practicality of Styrofloor. The compression resistance means that it can be walked on and withstand foot traffic without damage. The closed cell structure of the insulation makes it long-lasting and moisture resistant.
You can install Styrofloor quickly
Installation is fast and simple, meaning you can save valuable time. When installing Styrofloor, no direct mechanical fixing into the floor is required. The boards slot together with their tongue and grooved edges and joints should be glued together with standard PVA adhesive. A 10-12mm continuous gap is left around the perimeter of the room for expansion. There is only one simple operation required to fit insulation and a floor surface. You can then simply apply your chosen floor covering for a final finish.
Environmentally friendly
Panel Systems’ Styrofloor offers an environmentally friendly option for your project, and has low global warming potential (GWP) plus zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). This means that the impact on the environment is minimal.

How do you use Styrofloor to insulate a garage floor?
Step one: The first step to insulating a garage floor is to calculate the number of boards required. You can use our area calculator to decide how much you will need.
Step two: Once you have the amount of Styrofloor you need, remove the skirting. New concrete floors should be left as long as possible before laying Styrofloor to allow adequate time to dry out. Providing that the new floor is level, the use of a floor screed in not essential. Damp proofing is then advised, and the incorporation of a damp proof membrane should be in accordance with established building practices. In the absence of a damp proof membrane, a 1000 gauge polythene sheet can be used prior to laying the Styrofloor.
Step three: Styrofloor has a tongue and groove detail on each chipboard to make installation easy, allowing you to easily slot each board together. The boards require a 10-12mm expansion gap between any wall and the chipboard. Where floors are uneven, up to 6mm thickness of building sand can be used to level the boards during fitting. Apply your chosen floor covering for a final finish.
What other types of floors are suitable for Styrofloor insulation?
As a hardy and robust floor panel, Styrofloor can handle the everyday functionality required for flooring in most domestic properties. Styrofloor boards can be installed on either a solid concrete, timber or beam & block floor. When installing onto timber joists, the joists should be no more than 400mm apart.
In addition to garages, Styrofloor can also be an excellent energy saving option for customers’ garden rooms and summer houses, delivering great insulation whilst keeping costs to a minimum.
