A Guide to Styrofloor: Its Uses, Properties and Benefits

For the average modern household or business, excellent insulation is a must. Whether to save on energy costs, keep your space warm or cool, or be more eco-friendly, flooring insulation provides an easy and effective way to achieve all of these benefits.

Styrofloor is one of the best modern options on the market for floor insulation, especially in combination with underfloor heating. Read on to find out more about what Styrofloor is and why it may be the best choice for your home or project.

Introduction

In this guide:

What is Styrofloor and how is it made?

Styrofloor is an insulated flooring panel which is suitable for homes, offices, lofts, conservatories, garden buildings and more. While many kinds of floor insulation require floor screed to finish so is quicker and more cost-effective to install than other types of insulation.

Styrofloor is created from 18mm thick p5 moisture resistant chipboard with a Ravatherm XPS insulation backing. Each panel includes a tongue and groove edge for easy installation. Styrofloor is also bonded with Ravatherm XPS, an extruded polystyrene, for long-lasting and hardwearing results. If you’re considering upgrading the insulation in your home, Styrofloor is the ideal choice.

What are the main properties of Styrofloor?

Styrofloor is a top choice for many contractors and DIYers across the UK.

Robust and high-quality

With a robust and high-quality design, this flooring insulation board can handle even the highest-traffic areas, without becoming damaged over time. This makes it suitable for use in room conversions and upgrades.

Insulating

As insulation specifically, Styrofloor is also a convenient option. Thanks to the different thickness options, Styrofloor is highly energy-efficient and cost-saving, helping to minimise heating bills.

Acts as damp proofing and moisture resistant

Ravatherm XPS, the backing material used to create Styrofloor, has a closed cell structure which means that no moisture can penetrate the insulation layer.

This makes Styrofloor a useful tool to keep damp at bay as a damp proof membrane due to this additional property.

The benefits of Styrofloor

As one of the most reliable and effective flooring insulation options on the market, Styrofloor has significant benefits. Maybe you’re looking for insulation for a specific room in your home or you’re considering outfitting a whole property with high-quality floor insulation. Whatever your reason, this material is one of the best options on the market.

Cost-effective and practical

Styrofloor combines both insulation and a floor finish, making it a cost-effective and practical solution. This eliminates the need for a final screed when laying your flooring, helping you to save time on the project.

Quick installation

Installation is fast and simple. The boards slot together with their tongue and grooved edges and joints should be glued together with standard PVA adhesive. No direct mechanical fixing into the floor is required. Where floor surfaces are uneven, up to 6mm of building sand can be used to help level the boards during installation. A continuous 10 -12mm gap should be left around the perimeter of the room for expansion. Full installation instructions can be found on our website by clicking here.

Compression and water resistance

Excellent compression resistance and water resistance add to the practicality of Styrofloor. The compression resistance means that it can be walked on and withstand a huge amount of traffic without damage and its water resistance makes it long-lasting and damp-proof.

Environmentally friendly

Styrofloor offers an environmentally friendly option for your project. Ravatherm XPS has low global warming potential plus zero ozone depletion potential. This means that in its creation, lifetime and in its disposal, the impact on the environment is minimal.

What types of floors are suitable for Styrofloor?

As a versatile product, Styrofloor is suitable for a range of different residential and commercial projects. It can be a valuable addition to renovation and an excellent option for new build homes or properties in need of high-quality insulation. Styrofloor boards can be installed on either a solid, timber or beam & block floor. When installing onto timber joists, the joists should be no more than 400mm apart.

As a hardy and robust floor panel, Styrofloor can more than handle the everyday functionality required for flooring in most domestic properties

In addition to flooring within your home, Styrofloor can also be utilised in conservatories, garden buildings, extensions or conversions to provide the best possible insulation and floor surface for newer areas of the home or building.

Similarly, this insulation can be an excellent energy saving option for garden rooms and summer houses, delivering great insulation without sacrificing cost or looks. If you’re keen to invest in floor insulation that’s both functional and attractive, Styrofloor is a good choice.
